_to write darkness

A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell. _c.s. lewis

First Swimmer.

Posted by abramjanson on June 17, 2009

Hello Friends.

It appears I am human… Haha… Just kidding… But seriously… I finally punched my ticket for the first swimmer of my guiding career (i’m not counting some crazy lady last year who jumped in… ūüėõ )

Had the all day trip… everything was going great. Good lines in the rapids… Good conversation in the boat… great lunch… and then came Siedel’s Suckhole.

I just straight up got worked.

And… Then she just went out the back. ¬† I watched her go… slow motion… head over heels out the back of the boat… She got sucked down… shot under the boat… and came up 10 feet in front… meanwhile… we were still getting worked in the hole. ūüôā It was quite the good surf that is for darn sure.

The important part… I kept us from flipping. ūüôā

And in my defense… Easily the rapid that serves up the most carnage on that entire section of river… It’s legit.

It happens to the best of us… I guess. Haha. ¬†As always… It’s a humbling experience and you really get a renewed realization of the enormous power that the river possesses. ¬†Check out a little video of some Siedel’s action below… to give you a little taste of my day… ūüôā

Just got worked.

Bless!

civilization.

Posted by abramjanson on May 31, 2009

Greetings friends.
I returned to civilization yesterday evening.  The week was incredible.  It really was a huge blessing to my life.  I truly do believe that this is where I need to be.

Last week synopsis:

Day 1: Blindfolded. Dropped off in the wilderness. Given 6 maps. Told to make our way to different waypoints. Lots of fog. Even more rain. Saw a herd of elk within 50 yards of us. Deep conversations amidst the rain.  Camped for the night in one of the most awe-inspiring aspen groves known to man.

Day 2: Beautiful sunrise. Oatmeal and hot chocolate for breakfast. No rain to begin the day.  Hiked a lot. Relaxed. Enjoyed time to myself. Met up with other groups in remote rendezvous location late.

Day 3:  Woke up at 5:30. Peaked a fourteener. Glissaded down a mountain. Performed many training scenarios. Returned to camp. Chilled. Fellowship abounded. Spooned with Jonah for warmth. Laughed so hard I cried and got a cramp.

Day 4: Woke up. Chilled out over breakfast.  Loved on each other. More scenarios. More training. Ice axe throwing competition.  Corporate worship.  Affirmation and sharing under the stars.  Slept with every other guide under one tarp.  Loved life.

Day 5: Woke up eventually. Orienteered. Played the question game. Enjoyed the hail. ¬†Eventually… hiked out to civilization… unfortunately.

So… there is the jist of the week. Obviously… the shortened version. ¬†To much to share with you over this. Many stories to tell. Oh… and camera died on first day… forgot to charge battery… so pictures will be coming as soon as I steal them from other people.¬†

Mercies.

Colorado.

Posted by abramjanson on May 19, 2009

Greetings friends!

So… It has been a little bit of a wild ride for the last week of so.

Finished school on Wednesday. Packed up and returned home Thursday evening. Unpacked everything from school and repacked everything for Colorado on Friday. Drove just over 17 hours Saturday. Slept three hours in a super sketch truck stop in the middle of Kansas. Woke up. Drove an hour. Took a nap. Woke up. Drove the rest of the way to the ‘Springs.’ Had coffee with friends. Drove to BV. All day rock climb Monday. Two riv trips today. I’m exhausted. However… all is well. I can’t complain. We start second year river training tomorrow which will be very challenging physically and emotionally. I’m pretty nervous but looking forward to it.

I went fishing on the Ark today after dinner and managed to bring in 6 browns and 1 rainbow in the span of about 45 minutes.

To some it all up… The riv is huge. The mountains are covered. The fishing is good.

What else could I ask for?

Oh yea… and the people are sweet. ūüôā

Westwater. Speechless.

Posted by abramjanson on March 27, 2009

Greeting Friends!

Phew… so the return to school has been less than relaxing… that’s for sure. ¬†I missed two days of classes on the back end of SB which has made for an interesting start to the last half of the semester. School aside… Life is sooo good.

The Spring River Trip through Ruby, Horsethief, and Westerwater Canyons was incredible. ¬†Good times and great oldies for sure. ¬†I’ll give you guys a short run down of the happenings of last week.

Flew into Denver International Airport. Picked up by my good friend Adam Callaway. ¬†Chilled in Denver for the night. ¬†Woke up in the morning, packed all our gear in his car and made the 2 1/2 hour trek out to Buena Vista. ¬†Grabbed a $5 footy from Subway and made our way to Noah’s. ¬†Met up with 6 other guides going on the trip and packed the trailers. ¬†Went to Rob’s house which is in BV for the evening for pizza. ¬†Bed time.

Woke up @ 5:30 AM. Met the entire crew of 22 @ Noah’s @ 6. ¬†Stopped at Bongo’s for coffee. ¬†Jumped in vehicles and headed to Grand Junction, CO. De-rigged trailers, pumped boats, packed dry bags, loaded gear on rafts and “rigged it to flip” and set out. ¬†

Arrived at our first campsite in Ruby Canyon. Set up camp. Relaxed. Talked around the fire. Ate dinner. (We ate like kings by the way…. food was so legit… Spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, brownies cooked over the fire, pork tenderloin, baked potatoes in the fire, homemade peach pie, fajitas with all the fixings… etc. ūüôā )

Woke up the next morning eventually… ate breakfast, packed up the rafts and headed out for a stretch of water called Horsethief… ¬†Incredible scenery… Good times… Lazy times on the riv… Time on the raft was the best. No schedule… Nowhere to go… nothing to do… no agenda… only thing to do is enjoy yourself and the incredible people your with. ¬†This schedule was what the next three days consisted of… It was incredible. ¬†Here a few pictures of Horsethief.

The last two days we headed into Westwater Canyon. ¬†We camped at the MOST INCREDIBLE campsite I have ever stayed at. ¬†Pictures don’t do justice… nor do my words. ¬†We set up camp on a bend of the Colorado… ¬†The other side of the river… 500 foot cliff… Sandy beach… huge black rocks and boulders… the whole nine. ¬†I took a little video to try to demonstrate the awesomeness of it… but again… does not do justice. ¬†I will post videos soon…

The last day was rounded out with more incredible water and some super sweet rapids as we headed out of Westwater.

Pullout was in Cisco, Utah… Yes… We went from Colorad to Utah.

Incredible times. Only motivated me more for this summer. ūüôā
I leave you with more pictures of the trip.  BLESS!
